    Merlot ist eine der beliebtesten Rebsorten der Welt, dank seiner üppigen Aromen von dunklen Früchten und seinem seidig weichen Abgang. Merlot-Weine haben in der Regel einen mittleren oder vollen Körper mit recht weichen Tanninen, wodurch sie sehr leicht zu trinken sind. Typische Aromen sind Brombeere, Cassis und Pflaume mit einem Hauch von dunkler Schokolade und viel Würze, wenn sie in Eichenholz gereift sind.

    Schlüsselregionen der Merlot-Herstellung

    Merlot ist die am häufigsten angebaute Rebsorte in Bordeaux, wo sie normalerweise mit Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec und Petit Verdot verschnitten wird. Merlot wird vor allem am rechten Ufer der Gironde in den renommierten Appellationen Pomerol und St-Emilion angebaut, wo er zu den lehmigen Böden und dem gemäßigten Klima passt. Weitere Schlüsselregionen für hochwertige Merlot-Weine sind Italien, wo die Rebsorte in den Weinen der Super-Toskana verwendet wird, und das Napa Valley in Kalifornien.

    Merlot als Speisenbegleiter

    Die besten Merlot-Weine sind dank ihres einladenden und ausgewogenen Geschmacksprofils in der Regel küchenfreundlich. Merlot-Weine aus der Neuen Welt, die aus Kalifornien oder Australien stammen, sind in der Regel etwas gehaltvoller und reifer und passen gut zu einem saftigen Steak, gegrillten Rippchen oder einem deftigen Eintopf. Merlot-basierte Bordeaux-Weine sind in der Regel zurückhaltender und erdiger und passen zu Wildgerichten wie Wild, Fasan oder einem einfachen Ratatouille.
